چکیده
Zeolites are nanoporous crystalline alumino-silicates with a rich variety of interesting properties and industrial applications. With over 140 zeolite framework topologies synthetically available—each with its own range of compositions—zeolites offer size-, shapeand electrostaticallyselective adsorption, diffusion and reaction up to remarkably high temperatures. Zeolites are widely used as petroleum catalysts, desiccants, ion exchangers and filters, environmentally safe detergents, and as molecular sieves for separating chemical mixtures. It is safe to say that zeolites offer a rich array of nanotechnologies. The structural and chemical versatility offered by zeolites strongly suggests that other applications lie ahead for these materials. During the past few years, a flurry of interest has emerged in using microwave-heated zeolites in chemical processes, such as catalyst synthesis, ion Simulating Microwave-Heated Diffusion in Zeolite Nanopores

Simulating the relaxation dynamics of microwave-driven zeolites.
We have performed equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to study how microwave (MW)-heated zeolite systems relax to thermal equilibrium. We have simulated the relaxation of both ionic and dipolar phases in FAU-type zeolites, finding biexponential relaxation in all cases studied. Fast-decay times were uniformly below 1 ps, while slow-decay times were found to be as long a...
متن کاملExperimental evidence of selective heating of molecules adsorbed in nanopores under microwave radiation.
We have performed in situ quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements on zeolite-guest systems under microwave irradiation, for comparison with corresponding simulations. Both experiment and simulation reveal selective heating of methanol in silicalite, but little to no heating of benzene in silicalite. Effective translational and rotational temperatures extracted from QENS data under m...
متن کاملSimulating microwave-heated open systems: tuning competitive sorption in zeolites.
We have developed a new grand canonical molecular dynamics (GCMD) algorithm to study microwave (MW) heating effects on competitive mixture sorption and have applied the method to methanol and benzene in silicalite zeolite. The new algorithm combines MW-driven molecular dynamics with grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC), the latter modeling adsorption/desorption processes. We established the valid...
متن کاملTime-dependent Gas-liquid Interaction in Molecular-sized Nanopores
Different from a bulk phase, a gas nanophase can have a significant effect on liquid motion. Herein we report a series of experimental results on molecular behaviors of water in a zeolite β of molecular-sized nanopores. If sufficient time is provided, the confined water molecules can be "locked" inside a nanopore; otherwise, gas nanophase provides a driving force for water "outflow". This is du...
متن کاملThe Technological Impact of Diffusion in Nanopores
The impact of nanopore diffusion on the performance of adsorption separation processes is reviewed. Zeolite membrane processes and kinetically selective cyclic adsorption processes depend for their selectivity on differences in intracrystalline diffusion rates so these processes are designed to operate under conditions of intracrystalline diffusion control. In contrast, the performance of equil...
